Types of acne vulgaris
Mild Acne Vulgaris
Blackheads
These are also referred to as open comedones. They take the form of plugs which block the skin pores. They appear as yellowish or black bumps. The plug is a mixture of skin cells, sebum and bacteria. They are not black because of dirt but because of the skin pigment within the dead skin cells and oxidization due to contact with the air.
Whiteheads
Also known as closed comedones. They are white or yellowish id colour. They take the form of plugs which block the skin pores. The plug is a mixture of skin cells, sebum and bacteria.
Pimple
Also referered to as a papules. An inflamation of the skin near the surface. These do not contain pus. Those that do contain pus are referred to as pustules.
Severe Acne Vulgaris
Nodules
Larger, more painful, solid lesions which are located deeper within the skin. Can last for months and scarring is common.
Cysts
Similar in appearance to a nodule but contains pus. Often painful and scarring is common with cystic acne.
