What is acne vulgaris?
Acne vulgaris or "common acne" is a skin condition which causes the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, inflammatory cysts or sebaceous cysts on or under the skin. Other terms to describe these formations are spots, pimples and zits. More on types of acne.
Who can be affected by acne?
Almost everyone at some point in their life has spots. Whether it be the occasional one or two, or in some cases, frequent breakouts of spots which cause discomfort and long term blemishes or scarring. The greater majority of people affected by acne are in their teenage year to early twenties. However, in some instances it can occur in the later years and is then often referred to as adult acne. It can also affect newborn children and this is often referred to as infantile acne.
Causes of Acne Vulgaris
Just below the surface of your skin are many small sebaceous glands. Their function is to produce an oily substance known as sebum. The sebum comes to the surface of the skin through small openings or pores in the skin. Sebum is produced to protect and waterproof the skin. Should for any reason these pores become blocked, the sebum will build up and acne will develop. Typically the reasons the pores become blocked are due to a build up of dead skin tissue in or around the pore, causing a build up of sebum. Treatments for acne vulgaris
There are a number of treatments available for acne vulgaris. The type of treatment suitable depends of the cause of the acne. Treaments include phototherapy, natural remedies, dietary, topical, oral, antibacterial, exfoliation and hormonal.
